Standing at the Threshold
May 22, 2016

Throughout the disciples’ journey of faith, Jesus has embodied God for them.  “Whoever has seen me,” he says, “has seen the Father.”  (John 14:9)  In the word-made-flesh, the fullness of God has been revealed.  As Jesus’ living ministry ends, as he returns to the Father, the gift of the Holy Spirit is revealed as the presence of God at the heart of all creation.  The people of God are ordained, as the Body of Christ, to live out the Gospel in their own lives and as a community of faith.  The Gospel of Jesus opens the way for the Gospel of the church.  As the Son returns to unity with the Father, the Spirit fills creation.  This indwelling Spirit is the way in which we will be present with us now.  We are invited to understand all of these things in the image, the metaphor of Holy Trinity:  God revealed as Father // Son // Spirit.

The Spirit of Truth is Within Us
May 15, 2016

Pentecost is one of the festival Sundays of the church year.  It is a special celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit, the very presence of God-self at the center of our being.  John’s Gospel proclaims that the Spirit of Truth abides in us and will be with us, revealing God’s wisdom through the course of our days.  It is a gift to be treasured and celebrated with each new day and a gift to be shared.  It is the power of the Spirit that gives us the language to share the grace and goodness of God with a wandering, searching world.
