LOOKING AHEAD to worship on Sunday, January 27…
As we continue with the focus of our Epiphany Series – The Light of the World! – we turn our attention to God’s invitation in Christ to live in the light that now shines in the world. The light that is the life of all people has come!
╬ “Live in the Light!”
Light is the first Epiphany – the first manifestation of God – in creation. Forever, we have known it as illumination of the place we are and a guide for the way forward. In their wilderness wanderings, the people of God relied on God’s promise to lead them, like a pillar of fire in the night. God’s invitation to people, throughout history, is to live in the light … the light revealed in the Son, the light in the center of our being, the light that shines in creation all around us, that no darkness can overcome.

PRAYER OF THE DAY ------------------------------------------
Creating God, you surround us in light. May your light be our guide as we make this passage of life together. May your light be our hope, our sustenance and our destination. Amen.

First Reading: Nehemiah 9:9-19
9 "Almighty God, you saw the distress of our ancestors in Egypt and heard their cry at the Red Sea. 10 You performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh and all his servants and all the people of his land, for you knew that they acted insolently against our ancestors. You made a name for yourself, which remains to this day. 11 And you divided the sea before them, so that they passed through the sea on dry land, but you threw their pursuers into the depths, like a stone into mighty waters. 12 Moreover, you led them by day with a pillar of cloud, and by night with a pillar of fire, to give them light on the way in which they should go. 13 You came down also upon Mount Sinai, and spoke with them from heaven, and gave them right ordinances and true laws, good statutes and commandments, 14 and you made known your holy sabbath to them and gave them commandments and statutes and a law through your servant Moses. 15 For their hunger you gave them bread from heaven, and for their thirst you brought water for them out of the rock, and you told them to go in to possess the land that you swore to give them. 16 "But they and our ancestors acted presumptuously and stiffened their necks and did not obey your commandments; 17 they refused to obey, and were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them; but they stiffened their necks and determined to return to their slavery in Egypt. Psalm 97:1-4,9-12
1 The Lord is king! Let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad!
2 Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3 Fire goes before him, and consumes his adversaries on every side.

Second Reading: 1 John 1:5-10

Gospel: John 8:12-20
12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life." 13 Then the Pharisees said to him, "You are testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not valid." 14 Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid because I know where I have come from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards; I judge no one. 16 Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is valid; for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. 17 In your law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is valid. 18 I testify on my own behalf, and the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf." 19 Then they said to him, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also." 20 He spoke these words while he was teaching in the treasury of the temple, but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

We delve into the focus of our Epiphany Series – The Light of the World! as we unpack the Genesis advent of light and the cosmic prologue to John’s Gospel. The light that is the life of all people has come into the world!
╬ Let there be light!
John’s Gospel begins with a re-telling of the magisterial creation story of Genesis. In the beginning is I AM. This “source and ground of all being” speaks light and it shines forth in the darkness. As we learn in John’s account – in this ongoing revelation – this light that shines has particularity, has identity, has “personhood.” It is the logos – the Word – the full and complete epiphany – manifestation – of the nature and wisdom of God. In the One is life, John says. And this life becomes the light of all humanity … a light no darkness can overcome.

Second Reading: Ephesians 5:8-15
8 For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Gospel: John 1:1-18

We move forward, in a new year, and in our Epiphany Series – The Light of the World! On the first Sunday after Epiphany, we traditionally celebrate the Baptism of Our Lord!
╬ Baptism of our Lord!
As the prophets foretold, "They shall name him Emmanuel, which means, God is with us." (Matthew 1:23) Yet Jesus comes among us not only as “God with us” but as one of us, in every respect. He enters fully into human experience. He says that his baptism by John fulfills God’s righteousness in him just as he calls for the fulfillment of God’s righteousness in all people. Today, we embrace our baptismal heritage as the beginning of a path of revelation and spiritual growth, following the One who has come as light into the world!

Creating God, in the waters of baptism you claim us as your own. Help us each day to renew and refresh ourselves in the water of life. Set us free to live as your people and to proclaim in all the world the gift of life that is your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Second Reading: Acts 8:14-17

Finally, The Feast of Epiphany falls on a Sunday! We celebrate the dawning of a new year, the “manifestation” of God in Christ, and the visit of the Magi to honor the One who has been born “king of the Jews.” We begin our Epiphany Series – The Light of the World!
╬ Epiphany! The word Epiphany means “manifestation,” something made real, revealed or made known in the world around us. It also denotes something that takes place within us: a sudden, striking realization, an intuitive perception or insight into essential meaning. In this season of Epiphany, we explore the revelation and transforming insights that come to us in the “manifestation” of God in Christ Jesus. He is born into the world as a light shining into the shadow places of life. Yet even as we come to know him as the Light of the World, he calls forth the light of God that is in each of us to shine for the world to see.

Creating God, shine your light this day throughout creation. Let all come from near and far to celebrate the gift of the Christ and to share the good news of life and deliverance he brings. Amen.

Second Reading: Ephesians 3:1-12
3 This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles — 2 for surely you have already heard of the commission of God's grace that was given me for you, 3 and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, 4 a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. 5 In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: 6 that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 7 Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God's grace that was given me by the working of his power. 8 Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, 9 and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; 10 so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him.
