The Season of Pentecost has historically been called the “Ordinary” time, though it is anything but “ordinary.”  Rather, it is the time for which the gathered people of God have been “ordained”:  to begin to live out in our own lives everything that has been revealed in the living ministry of Jesus.  Immediately following the Day of Pentecost, we celebrate Holy Trinity, a festivalSunday in the church year when we focus on the mystery of God revealed in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  In worship, we explore the deep meanings of this Trinitarian understanding of God, and its implications for our lives in the world today. 
And today is Father’s Day, a time for us to celebrate the blessings of God that flow to us through the love and nurturing of fathers!

Pentecost! This is the day of Pentecost, the birthday of the church. The day that fire and wind rained down! The day that the followers of Jesus finally stood firm and proudly as the new leaders of Christ’s church! That boldness was not conjured up by the individual but by the communal blessing of the Holy Spirit. There is a South African saying, “I am because you are and we are because Christ was.” We are linked by some invisible chord that, when nurtured and prodded, makes us one with one another –and that is  the church. The Church - Called, Enlightened, Sanctified for the work of Jesus Christ.

"Mary Magdalene's"

Mary Magdalene is one of the most enigmatic and faithful figures in all of Scripture.  Variously maligned as a prostitute and celebrated as the "Apostle to the Apostles," history has layered onto her a variety of identities.  And yet the information we have of her in Scripture is as slight and simple as it is profound.  Known only as one from whom Jesus cast "seven demons," Mary of Magdala's life is powerfully transformed by her encounter with Christ.  Faithfully following through his living ministry, to the cross, to the grave and beyond, she becomes the pivotal figure proclaiming that the One who was crucified in the flesh has been raised in the Spirit, and goes before us into a new day.


As we continue our series on Living Resurrected Lives, we focus on Mary Magdalene and her courageous faith; an icon of the early church and a lesson in discipleship to this day.

"Faith Works"
Pastor Brad Highum talks to us about Faith and Works

In the turbulent times following the resurrection and ascension, James the brother of Jesus rose to leadership among the people of The Way. History and Scripture give us keen insight into this one who knew the Lord most intimately. They reveal a person of deep devotion and passion, and one captive of a highly kinetic and “en-fleshed” idea of what it means to be faithful. James is entirely focused on God and faith being incarnated in us, just as they were in Jesus; that we, too, are called to live the way and the truth God reveals in the Resurrected One. For James this is not an intellectual proposition, or good theory, or philosophy.Rather it is a way of action in the world. For James, faith is lived, expressed in all we say and manifest in all we do, or it is not faith at all. “Faith without works,” he famously says, “is dead!” … a conundrum for Martin Luther and a challenge to all who seek to live faithfully today. As we continue our series on Living Resurrected Lives, we focus on James and his powerful message to the early church, and to us. Above is the bulletin cover image.
